WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – After trailing by 10 midway through the third quarter, the Virginia Tech women’s basketball team used a 13-0 run to rally past Wake Forest on Thursday night at Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

Sidney Cook and Chanette Hicks led the Hokies (16-12, 4-11 ACC) with 15 points each. Hannah Young added 13 points while Vanessa Panousis chipped in seven. Taijah Campbell tallied eight rebounds and four blocks.

“A really good win for the team on the road,” head coach Dennis Wolff said. “We’ve had some things not go our way and in that Hokie way the kids stayed with it. Sidney Cook and Chanette Hicks were terrific on both ends of the court, so it was a good team win. I also thought Taijah Campbell, despite not scoring, really had an effect on the game. It was a good win and we’re looking forward to Senior Day on Sunday.”

The Hokies and Deacs traded baskets early in the opening quarter before Wake Forest used a 9-0 run to go up 11-4. The Demon Deacons took a 13-8 lead into the second frame where they used a 12-3 run to push the lead to 23-11 with 3:29 to go. Tech answered with an 8-0 run of its own to cut it to a four-point 23-19 game off a layup from Hicks, but a 3-pointer at the buzzer gave the Deacs a 26-19 advantage heading into the break.

Wake Forest pushed its lead to 10 coming out of the break and led by as many midway through the third quarter. The Deacons still were up 34-26 with 3:57 remaining in the period before the Hokies went to work. Tech responded with a 13-0 run over the next 5:47 sparked by a jumper from Cook and 3-pointer from Young as the Hokies went on top 39-34 with 7:28 to play.

A jumper from Cook with 5:43 to go gave the Hokies their largest lead of the game, up 44-39. Wake responded, outscoring the Hokies 10-4 to tie it up at 48-48 with 1:14 remaining. Young scored for the Hokies on the next possession and Campbell stole the ball to prevent the Deacs from answering on the next play. Cook and Hicks were perfect from the line in the final seconds as the Hokies secured the win.

Milan Quinn had 14 points and 13 rebounds for Wake Forest (15-13, 6-9 ACC). Elisa Penna added 12 points and Amber Campbell chipped in eight.

The Hokies will wrap up the regular season on Sunday, Feb. 28 when they play host to rival Virginia. Game time is set for 2 p.m. at Cassell Coliseum. Tech will honor its seniors, Hannah Young, Taijah Campbell and Dominique Powell as well as senior manager Daisia Payne in a pregame ceremony.
