TEENS + ABORTION

Is it legal to get an abortion in North or South Carolina if I'm under 18?

Yes. It is legal to get an abortion in North AND South Carolina if you are a minor.

The age of consent is 18 in North Carolina and 17 in South Carolina. If you are under this age in the state where you are receiving care, the law requires one of your parents, a legal guardian, or a judge to give you permission for your abortion.

If getting the permission of a parent or legal guardian is not an option for you, you can apply for a “judicial bypass”. This means a judge excuses you from getting permission or telling your parent or guardian.

How do I get an abortion without parental permission?

If you are a minor and do not have permission from a parent or legal guardian to get an abortion you can apply for a judicial bypass.
This means that a judge excuses you from getting permission or telling your parent or guardian.

You can get a lawyer at no cost to you to help you navigate the process. You will need to fill out some forms and appear in front of a judge. If you want assistance on accessing a judicial bypass, please call our helpline at 855-518-4603.
