Happy Black History Month from Carolina Abortion Fund
During Black History Month, we don’t merely say ‘Happy Black History Month’.
We’re in the Venmo comments, being Black together, screaming, “TREAT YOURSELF! THEY DON’T WANNA SEE YOU EAT!”
We’re talking about our children, being Black together, running around the house, being free and getting freer.
We’re at our favorite food spot, Being Black together, eating as usual and hugging each other extra long.
We’re in Las Botanicas, being Black together, helping each other decide between roots and stones.
We’re at our queer clubs, being Black together, tipping our bartender and our local drag queens and the themcee heavier.
We’re in the local bookstore, being Black together, picking up covers with families that look like ours, shuffling through stickers that affirm our liberation, flipping through zines that speak to our lives and before we leave, being sure to leave safer sex kits with the bookkeepers.
We’re in the group chats right around the corner from our goals, being Black together, using each other's full government names and appropriate titles like Mx. Lawyer, Dr. Best Friend, Professor, Lifelong Bestie, and Cousin IBCLC.
We’re standing alongside other Southern Orgs with their organizers, and – if you know, you know – almost always being Black together. We are on the steps of the city, county, and statehouses until we’re heard.
We’re cackling with all Black people winning, Black people taking up room, and Black people uniting across all spaces and times, together.
But for all the Black folks who we won’t have the chance to slow dance under “how are youuuu’s” with, to all the Black folks on the front lines, to all the Black people defending their clinics, to all the Black folks from the dirty south to the North Pole: Happy Black History Month forever, no one and nothing will ever take it from us
