Black Maternal Health Week of Action
Year to year, administration to administration– Black women, femmes, thems and fathers have navigated, shared information and comforted each other through transitions in clinics and hospitals.
Together, we remember the wisdom that has allowed us generations of safe abortions, births, and postpartum journeys. No party nor president has prioritized us the way we do, nor could they.
Black Maternal Health Week, created by Black Mamas Matter Alliance, was created to highlight the maternal health crisis of Black mothers in America. It has continued to evolve with the collective over the years; we are in places where we uplift what keeps us alive and better to center our power and our thriving. This week is typically celebrated in fellowship, through storytelling and big, giant hugs even if it’s your first time meeting. For us at CAF, our calls continue to be blessed by the sounds of laughing children while a parent seeks the help they need to keep being here for the children they already have. The reality is the perilous legal hurdles our callers face prove abortion is a vital piece of healthcare access for Black families. We would be remiss without emphasizing we fail our families when we restrict access to a full suite of healthcare services from trustworthy, bias-free providers of our choosing, when and where we need them.
Close out BMHW in action: call your legislator and talk through the community refunds required to shift from the systemic harms that are hemorrhaging our families to the integration of the communities wisdom and wishes. Familiarize yourself with your right to individualized care as a means of both affirming and advocating for your wishes and resisting the biases that kill us and our siblings. Donate to an organization like the Afiya Center, Sistersong, Black Abortion Defense League (and well, us) to continue support Black families or better yet, merely cashapp your favorite Black mother today.
Love a Black Woman to infinity,
